How To Be A Trendy Traveler

Hey! It's been a while. Sometimes it's like that. It takes a while for inspiration to strike But when it does.. it does. Here's some thoughts I want to share while the temps are still pretty warm!

I have traveled a lot in my lifetime. Most recently I've been contained between Kentucky and Alabama, but occasionally I get to see friends and things as well. This year specifically has provided me with several traveling opportunities. We've been to Las Vegas, Colorado, Minnesota, Montana and will be headed to California before the end of the year. I’m very thankful for each opportunity I have been given and want to make the most of them.

I have spent more time in an airport this year than I had in many years combined. One thing that stuck out to me when I have traveled is this: Your travel attire matters. I’ve seen everything. I’ve seen someone tracking through the airport in a dress and heels to someone who looks like they just rolled out of bed. My vision for myself is to be somewhere in between. A dress and heels for a long day of travel? No thank you. But also a long day of travel can wear you down so maybe you need a little “something-something” to feel put together when you get where you are going. After my travels this year- I think I can help you with that. I’ll share my formula for planning my travel look.

Step 1: A trendy comfort piece.

Start by picking out a trendy comfort piece for bottoms. If you are reading this in 2022, then this piece could be joggers, leggings, biker shorts or even the athletic skorts that are everywhere right now. The main goal is that it’s sweat proof and comfortable.

Step 2: The perfect kicks.

I think even if you don’t travel regularly you know that most airports require you to take your shoes off. While sandals are easy to get off and on, they leave you with your bare feet on the airport floor where everyone has walked. If you really stop and think about it it's just kind of... gross. Thankfully the rise of athleisure fashion has brought comfortable and cute kicks to the forefront. Kicks and dresses are also on the forefront of fashion right now. That means you can keep your socked feet clean and comfortable as you go from gate to gate regardless of which trendy bottom you choose.

Step 3: A basic.

Traveling by plane, especially in the summer, takes you from cold to hot to cold again. Traveling by car isn’t all that different. When the air or heat is on it is blowing at you with full force. When it isn’t, you are left with whatever the weather outside is doing. This means it is important to layer. For your top you want to pick a neutral tank or tee that is good for layering. It can be a legitimate t-shirt (think band or athletic event) or it can be a store bought plain-white tee or tank top. The choice is yours. Pick one you love and just generally feel good in. If it’s too big you can always tuck it in to the front of your bottoms or do the front tie look that is popular right now.

Step 4: The final touch.

Your final touch is the top layer. Usually something long sleeve. It can be a lightweight sweatshirt, a denim jacket or shirt or even a casual boutique top you can wear over a tank or tee (think oversized and thermal or sweater material if you’re reading this in 2022). Cuff the sleeves for an extra trendy traveler look. Don't skip this step. On a recent trip I wore a skort, cute kicks and a comfy fitted lightweight sweatshirt. I decided a tank top or under shirt wasn't necessary. I felt great. I looked great. Until we were way early for our flight and had time to run to the local botanical gardens... where it was 90 degrees. Thankfully I carried perfume with me or else the people on the plan might not have been so impressed with me. Here me when I give you advice on this. Layers. Are. Everything.

I've given you a little starter guide below. The first picture features a standard white tank top from paired with a black Columbia skort, grey and white Sorel kicks, and a lavender North Face sweatshirt all from Hooper's Outdoor Center. The second outfit features the same white tank, a pair of army green joggers, a loose sweater like boutique top and the COOLEST kicks I've ever owned; a pair of multicolor (tan, coral and army green) Sorel tennies also from Hooper's Outdoor Center . All Hooper's items mentioned are in stock at the time of me writing this so head over to the site/store ASAP!

Airplanes are tight enough without being uncomfortable in your clothing. Say goodbye to fitted jeans or short denim shorts. Take them with you for a night out, but avoid them on the plane if possible.

Bonus tip- tinted moisturizer. The last time I traveled I broke down and tried some tinted moisturizer. I was headed to the mountains on a leisure hiking trip and didn’t want to fool with a full face of make up each day. I discovered that the tinted moisturizer was also great for travel days! I used to not wear make up. My face felt pretty clean, but I had rosy red cheeks and just looked disheveled when I made it to my destination. With tinted moisturizer, a little mascara and some bronzer I was able to keep that fresh faced feeling while looking mostly alive by the end of the day, ha!

I love clothing and I love feeling confident regardless of where I am or where I’m going, but I’m not willing to sacrifice my comfort for fashion. Thankfully with the right formula you don’t have to!

Happy Travels!

-Monica
