4 Color Combos to Carry You Into Fall

Everyone knows a power couple whether it be in real life or fiction. Did you know there are power couples for your wardrobe as well? Yes! It's true.

Transitioning seasons can be difficult to navigate. Those of us in the south are sometimes having to navigate all 4 seasons in one day! So, how do you simply give a nod to the upcoming season instead of advancing full steam ahead before you're truly ready?

The answer is in your accessories and color combinations!

I'm sharing a few of my favorite color combinations for fall and why I put them together so that you can easily copy my formula (You will only ever hear me use math terminology in relation to fashion. I'm sure my dad is so proud ...).

I start with a favorite color of the future season. Since we are looking towards fall in this discussion; I chose rust, army green, turquoise and mustard. I then pair each fall color with a complimentary color of the current season. Summer is the season we are transitioning from so I selected some of my favorite summer colors to wear.

Rust is paired with blush.

The army green is paired with a peach (or coral).

Turquoise is paired with red.

Mustard is paired with a light or periwinkle blue.

You could use the color wheel if you are unsure how to match colors. Pinterest is also a handy tool for researching color palette ideas.

Here are some real-life looks developed with my favorite early fall combos listed above!

1. Rust & Blush

This is a simple rust colored t shirt dress. I wear it often in the fall with booties and cardigans. But just because it is rust colored doesn't mean it can't be worn during those transitional months when the weather is still warm. The rust gives a nod to fall while the blush re-centers you in the current season.

I’ve got several pair of blush earrings in stock because it’s one of my favorite colors lately! You can claim your own pair of blushing beauties here.

2. Army Green & Peach

Army green is quite possibly my favorite color ever so I will wear it whatever the time of year may be. But it's not hard to see why it is a perfect fall colored base for this outfit.

I tend to take on a bohemian vibe as I begin to transition into fall. I think it is because the humidity makes my hair so frizzy and curly that it’s the only look that works for me. When I read “bohemian” I automatically insert “bangle”. Maybe because they both start with B? I don’t know. But to me, bohemian means messy hair, lace and/or florals, and big bangle jewelry. So I thought these earrings were a natural pairing based on coloring and style. You could also go with a brighter coral.

3. Turquoise & Red

You may think I am cheating on this one for two reasons. First, turquoise may not feel like a fall color to you but I submit that its an every-season color so will you just go with me this once? Second, this shirt is not technically turquoise. I wanted to show you these looks using items from my own closet. I use turquoise in my accessories more than in my clothing but I determined that this denim shirt is in the same color family as turquoise so it works just the same. You could even substitute teal if you wanted. Shade is less important than tone. The main point is that you take a fall blue and pair it with a red show-stopper like pictured.

4. Mustard & Periwinkle

You could argue that periwinkle is a spring color but you would be wrong. Kidding, kidding! I think it can definitely be classified under spring or summer. But since lighter blues are not my best colors I often save them for summer when I'm tanned and at my best, haha!

When I am ready to ease into fall I can simply pair a periwinkle blue accessory with a mustard colored top and I am ready to take on the non-fall day in fall fashion!

These periwinkle blue accessories are the perfect dose of on trend color when paired with this T.

That's it! The most basic tutorial ever. Three steps. 1. Pick a fall color for your base. 2. Pair it with a summer color. 3. Take on the world.

But seriously... whatever rules you decide to live by, the most important is that you feel confident in what you are wearing. So always look for ways to incorporate your favorite colors and then add accessories to add a secondary pop of color.
